Thursdays & Fridays

Students join us on Thursdays and Fridays from 9am to 2:00pm for a Waldorf-inspired schedule that includes yoga, science, language arts, geography, math, music (recorder), garden, nature studies, snack and lunch time, and outdoor playtimes.

Our teachers use a Waldorf-based curriculum, and at this age, we may begin to add in other eclectic curricula for some subjects.

Your home curriculum does not need to be Waldorf-based. We have students using a wide variety of curriculum at home, from Waldorf to eclectic to virtual to full packaged curriculum. Our program can be used as purely enrichment days or part of your home curriculum.

The 10 & 11 year olds will move through 4 Main Lesson Blocks each semester: Language Arts, Math, Life Science, and Geography. Each Main Lesson subject will be covered on both Thursday and Friday. The subjects will be divided into blocks which will last for roughly 4 week periods. Math and language arts will be practiced on most days through the blocks we are covering or through games and activities as a class.

Language Arts Main Lessons will present stories from Norse Mythology during the fall semester and Ancient Civilizations during the spring semester. These stories will fuel their imaginations and meet this age where they are, all while providing rich material for developing writing and grammatical skills.

Math Main Lessons will focus mainly on fractions for the 10 & 11 year olds. While learning fractions, they will be reviewing and sharpening skills learned in earlier elementary grades, while possibly moving to decimal fractions for the older students. This is a prime time to make sure all tables are well known before moving onto more advanced math techniques in the middle school grades. Math will be taught using art, movement, story, or activities with the students as a group, so that they get an experience that will enrich what they are learning at home.

Geography Main Lessons will start local and expand out to cover North America for the 10 & 11 year olds. They also begin to learn the geography of the lands they are learning about in Language Arts. Map drawing and Native American stories are a highlight of these blocks.

Life Science Main Lessons will cover Zoology in the Fall and Botany in the Spring. Students will learn different classifications of animals in zoology. They will tend a pollinators garden through the year to enhance botany. Drawing, modeling, and poetry will be the arts to really highlight these blocks.

Music lessons will revolve around learning to play the recorder and read music on the treble clef. The 10 & 11 year olds are ready to break down the rhythms and see fractions come to life in the form of music.

Snack and lunch times, and outdoor times, will be incorporated into the day so that students have a natural balance of active play time and time to quietly focus. Yes, we allow for plenty of outdoor time for our older kids because they still love it!

Part of our outdoor time will be free play, and the other part will be focused on gardening and nature studies where students will be exposed to topics such as flower and plant studies, pollinators, insects, nature crafts and more.

Yoga class for kids looks much different from yoga class for adults! Through movement, mindfulness, music, and breath, we will come together to cultivate a joyful calm; and set the stage for a day of learning and fun.
